José is fired by a sugar mill owner for being a strike ringleader. Now unemployed, he moves away instead of marrying Rita as originally planned… When Julio Bracho failed to get financing for his script about the corrupt state of the Mexican hinterland, Rumbera icon Ninón Sevilla took on the project, worked with him on the material and brought cinematography superstar Gabriel Figueroa on board about – did, in short, everything to make sure the film would turn out well in terms of style and quality, entirely in the spirit of the idol who inspired her stage name, the courtesan and patron Anne “Ninon” de l’Enclos from the era of the Sun King. The result is a formally adept, visually intoxicating, perfectly judged mixture of a melodrama and an analysis of political disparities. (om)
